These quotes from Dr Feldenkrais have moved me and guided my thinking:

From Moshe Feldenkrais

  • My purpose is to allow people to move closer to actually being creatures of free choice, to genuinely reflect individual creativity and emotion, freeing the body of habitual tensions and wired-patterns of behaviour so that it may respond without inhibition to do what the person wants.
  • I believe that the unity of mind and body is an objective reality. They are not just parts somehow related to each other, but an inseparable whole while functioning. A brain without a body could not think.

I approach each individual who comes for a class, individual lesson or mentoring as someone with a unique history and with unique questions to explore.

I feel privileged to be able to do work that supports the dignity of the individual and their ability to learn.

Unlike many other animals that are born with their basic movement patterns in place at birth, humans have a long apprenticeship before they acquire skills and become independent actors. Each of us has developed our own sense of ourselves through our individual heredity, culture, environment and experiences. None of us has the same handwriting or way of walking and the manner in which we find solutions to challenges is also unique, a result of  ongoing exploration and  experiential process.

Alice Friedman teaching Functional Integration

Throughout my 30 years of practice I continue to refine my skill in application of the Feldenkrais Method and incorporate my wealth of dance and psychology experience into my work. Whether it is a class, an individual lesson, a workshop or mentoring I engage with people to help them find ways and means to challenge their habitual and often limiting patterns of moving and acting.

I enjoy teaching Awareness Through Movement® classes and helping people find pleasurable ways to ease pain and stiffness. I delight in seeing the discoveries that come through slowing down, refining their ability to sense differences in themselves and reconnect with a sense of joy and ease in movement and life. It is rewarding to see others make the same discoveries and their profound effects in everyday life that I found for myself with this work.

My participation as an Assistant Trainer at Feldenkrais training programs offers an opportunity to fine-tune my teaching abilities. I am then able to share my insights and skills with my clients in private practice. The private practice, in turn, feeds the insights for the training room. Both are part of the means by which I continue my personal and professional growth. Also important in my continued growth is the work I do with colleagues in the Feldenkrais Guild to further the development of the profession, and my participation in study groups  with professionals in related disciplines.

I offer workshops on Salt Spring Island and throughout North America and am happy to tailor-make one for your group’s specific needs and interests. I have enjoyed working across disciplines with performing artists, psychotherapists and others to explore their interests and how the Feldenkrais Method can help refine their skills. It is stimulating for all participants to be part of these collaborations. I offer mentoring to individuals and groups of Feldenkrais practitioners, students as well as other somatic practitioners both in person and on-line.
